I was able to attend the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas this year. This was the first time I was able to attend and I was overwhelmed by how big it was. I spent 2 days walking around looking for cool toys and trying to see “what’s next”.
I know is should not surprise me but it always does, but the amount of cheap plastic toys being created each year is amazing. There were only a few manufactures there that were selling quality toys. One of my favorites is Maple Landmark. I spent a decent amount of time in their booth. They have recently obtained the rights to “Guess how much I love you” and “Maisy” and have new product lines that look outstanding that are sure to be a big seller for Christmas this year.
One of the main questions I heard asked to manufacturers is “Are your toys made in China?”. Obviously this is a huge topic that has concerned many parents. The fact is that a huge percentage of the toy manufactured in the world are made in China. You can find companies that manufacture outside of China, but it is not easy (Maple Landmark is one). Every company I spoke to said they were stepping up the inspection process on all of their products, but is that enough? We as a country are going to have to decide if we want “Cheap” toys or “Safe and Quality” toys. The way we make this decision is with our pocketbooks. If we continue to buy cheap toys, we will continue discover problems as companies cut corners trying to cut the manufacturing cost of a product by another $0.02.
